Music Northampton Band Kingsize rolled into town last weekend to perform their own addictive brand of covers and originals...

The group (Andy C, vocals and guitar, Jonah, guitar and vocals, local boy Liam Bennett, drums and percussion, Graham, bass and guitar, and Lewis, lead guitar) played three gigs over four days, starting at the Prince of Wales on Friday 13th, encompassing Finn McCoul's on Sunday 15th and finishing with an acoustic set back at the Prince on Monday 16th of August.

Friday's gig was a good start to the tour, the crowd happy to join in and sing along to the tracks they knew, whilst applauding with no little appreciation the band's original material. At one point of the gig however Liam saw fit to spit the dummy and round on Jonah for taking too long to change guitar between songs, requiring Andy to intervene in the best way he could... by swearing at them both! Thankfully the moment passed and the gig was concluded with aplomb.

Sunday's performance at Finn McCoul's was in danger of falling apart until the group got it together in the second set. One member down due to Jonah's early departure back to Northampton (which was because of work commitments, and not because Liam had snapped at him!), Andy took up rhythm guitar duties, performing valiantly if not skillfully until he snapped a string four songs in. The crowd hadn't seen the best of Kingsize yet so during the interval (during which the band's friend Sporanzo played a three comedy-song set to the mirth of all present) they regrouped, with Andy deciding it best to just go for it with the one guitarist (ie Lewis).

Kingsize came out fighting, with Andy, now free of the shackles of his six (or rather five!) string, putting in one of his trademark powerhouse frontman performances and the rest of the group matching him all the way. By the second encore it was obvious they had won the crowd over, with many dancing away to the infectious Kingsize rhythm.

The weekend was wound down with a mellow acoustic gig at the Prince of Wales on the monday evening. Graham and Andy, having purchased some new strings earlier in the day, swopped around guitar and vocal duties during two sets of new Kingsize lo-fi material and classic covers, with Liam providing percussion and backing. A good ending to a great tour, and Kingsize can be rightly pleased with themselves, having raised their profile in the area a notch or two. Future gigs are in the offing, and dates made available when confirmed.
