Local News A new independent record label has been launched, based in Falmouth...

Tamsin Blight and Bob Black have a history of running independent record labels.

Back in the 70’s Bob ran ‘Black and Red’ records which ran for weeks in the alternative charts in both Sounds and NME, he went on to run labels distributed by Rough Trade including artists such as the 'Modettes' who topped the indie charts for over 8 weeks. Working alongside Dick O’Dell he ran artist management for New York punks ‘Wayne County and the Electric Chairs’ as well supporting Dick to manage 'The Slits', 'The Pop Group' and set up Y records.

Other labels included the Original ‘Garage Records’ which had 'Maximum Joy' and others distributed by Stiff Records. While managing 'The Passions' from his Kilburn flat he supported Linda Neville in setting up a London office for 'The Gang of Four' and helped a string of indie bands to record and release their own tracks as well as getting deals for many through the major labels. Working part time at Polygram for Chris Briggs, Bob released a number of compilation albums featuring new jazz and other alternative outfits of the time.

Tamsin worked for both the Bron agency and The Station agency representing bands from Peter Gabriel to the 'Specials' before working exclusively for 'Madness' and helping them to set up their Zarjazz label in the eighties.

The latest venture ‘Ricks Records’ is in response to the needs of local band 'Ricks Rebels’, who have a line up of creative musicians who met up in drama school in Truro. Some of the band are still in full time education so getting released and promoted is very much a do it yourself activity. The band has a really solid following locally and while experimenting with cover versions from their favourite artists and influences they are prolific songwriters in their own right. The talent, energy and enthusiasm that Ricks Rebels demonstrate has led to the establishment of the label. Ricks Records has released the bands first Demo EP ‘Take One’ featuring 5 of the band's own songs which were recorded at Troubadour Studios In Falmouth.

As well as acting as a launch pad for Ricks Rebels, the label hopes to help other local outfits to get noticed and give them room to direct their own destinies while drawing on the knowledge and expertise of the label's founders. The stable grows...

The EP CD should be available at local independent record shops from the home page of the website www.ricksrecords.co.uk or email the label info@ricksrecords.co.uk
