Events A Modal Improvisation Workshop with Marc Hadley and Pete Kubryk-Townsend...

Saturday 19th May, 10am- 4pm
The Trinity Methodist Centre, Chywoone Hill, Newlyn.

Both the workshop leaders are known locally for their work in jazz, respectively on saxophone and double bass. However, Marc & Pete have working experience of diverse musical styles ranging from Balkan, Gypsy and Klezmer dances to Salsa, Afro and Raga.

The emphasis of this practical workshop will be on improvisation based on modes in a folk/roots context. Modes are the basis for many forms of music around the World, but remain a subject that is surprisingly little-known and rarely taught within the mainstream of musical education in schools and colleges.

One of the practical issues that Marc & Pete will address will be: 'What kind of things do you play when you have a backing consisting of only a drone - or two chords - for an extended period of time?' The Workshop aims to be mainly 'hands-on' rather than theory-based, although there will be space for those looking for clarification of what modes are and how they work.

All instrumentalists, including vocalists, are welcome in principle (but please indicate what you play if and when you make a reservation enquiry.)

The cost of the day will be 30.
