Symposium Invitation and Call for Papers

Saturday 16 February 2008, 10 a.m.

A Cornish Music Research Group has been formed at the Institute of Cornish Studies, Exeter University. The group is based at Tremough, Penryn the Cornwall Campus of the Combined Universities in Cornwall. Three figures central to the group will be known to many of you, they are Mike O'Connor, Merv. Davey and Frances Bennett.

The Group will be holding a symposium at Tremough on Saturday 16 February 2008. The symposium will run during the day from 10 a.m. and a linked musical social event will happen in Falmouth in the evening. It should be a stimulating day with lots of music, and many new insights into a little-known musical culture.

It is anticipated that the symposium will be of interest to scholars of vernacular, social and folk music, and scholars of social history. The intention is that words and music will both be part of a lively and informative day.

The symposium is a cultural activity endorsed by the Institute of Cornish Studies, the Royal Cornwall Museum and Royal Institution of Cornwall, and Gorseth Kernow.

Contributions, spoken, musical, or both, are invited from scholars, researchers and practitioners in the field of social, vernacular and folk music, including analogous regional or Celtic studies.

Potential contributors for 20 or 40 minute presentations are invited to submit outline proposals/papers by 7 December 2007.

Costs: costings are still being finalised but should comprise two nominal payments of less than about 5, to cover lunch and the evening event.
