Local News The following received from Paddy Haughton of Source FM's "Jazz Train". Sounds like an excellent idea...

To everyone in "The Jazz Trade":

“JAZZ IN THE PARK!” – A SourceFM Radio “ParkLive Event”

Source FM’s “Jazz Train” team are planning to put on a ‘jazz- flavoured’ version of “ParkLive” on Sunday 25th August, which will run from 12.00 noon til 5.00 p.m in Kimberley Park, Falmouth. We’re hoping to present a range of styles, instrumentation, sizes of formations, ages and experience, showcasing as many Cornwall based jazz musicians as is practible.

At present a number of musicians have expressed an interest in taking part and we’re hoping that some firm commitments from established groups will materialise shortly.

As an impecunious local community radio station we have no funds with which to pay anyone – (please read on anyway!) - bands and individuals will be able to publicise their own gigs, sell any merchandise including CDs, and the whole thing will be recorded. Music performed will be broadcast on the Source FM in the “Jazz Train” and other programmes. The Jazz Train has a national & international listener-ship, so the publicity will be worthwhile.

That being said, we’d like to encourage individual musicians to come along, possibly forming some impromtu ‘this gig only’ groups for the afternoon, hopefully sparking off some spontaneous moments – it could be exciting – and great fun besides!

At this time the programme is wide open, but we’d probably expect to run 5 or 6 sets of 30 – 55 minutes, depending on ‘who and what transpires’. We’ll need to have a fairly clear idea of who to expect by the 29th July. By mid-August we’d like to have a running order sorted, but, knowing the nature of jazz there would still be some flexibility.

We’re intending to slot in a few short sets; some jazz & poetry (jazz themed poems with subtle improvised accompaniment); a few entertaining (but informative) words on the subject of jazz & improvised music – and would like to open with something community based and large scale with input from local schools / County Music Service / Falmouth University (yes we know it’s out of term time, but youth / student bands could still perform).

So – I’m copying this to as many musicians as I can think of – but please forward the message to others who might be interested. If you can support this event in any way please contact me at - or on 07800 921908.

As luck would have it the Falmouth Yamaha Jazz Summer School will be running at Tremough Campus from the 12th to the 16th August, leaving a clear week before our “Jazz In The Park”. We’re hoping that some of the Summer School participants will want to join us – if only for the final “JATP” style set – (didn’t I mention this already?) – which we’re envisioning as a good old fashioned large scale jam session, probably based on a simple blues theme, with everyone on hand taking a chorus, while assorted horns build accompanying riffs – you know the sort of thing! This would bring things to a suitable climax, and show how jazz can simply be spontaneous fun for all concerned.

The event will be dedicated to one or more appropriate performing arts / jazz / music educational based charities, and all suggestions from you regarding this will be gratefully received by us.

I hope this tickles your fancy! If it all works out well, especially in combination with the Falmouth Yamaha Jazz Summer School, we could be on the verge of a future Falmouth Jazz Festival. Now wouldn’t that be something – and people might actually get paid to play! So please – get involved – help us spread the jazz message!
