Events Details of musicians appearing at St Ives Jazz Club between October and December 2017 follow (also added to gig list)...

All gigs: doors open 7.30pm, live music from 8.30 to 11-ish.

Please note we are only open 2 weeks in November and December
Bar snacks and light meals available until 8.15.

The lower prices are for St Ives Jazz Club members, MU members and Western Hotel residents. Students get in for £5.

Liane Carroll

Liane Carroll has been a pillar of the British jazz and soul scene for over thirty-five years. Born in London and raised in Hastings; from the beginning of her musical career at the age of fifteen, she has dedicated her life to creating a deep and abiding connection with audiences all over the world through her exceptional talent, versatility and ability to truly interpret a song. Along the way she has collaborated with such diverse artists as Paul McCartney, Gerry Rafferty, Long John Baldry, Ian Shaw, Claire Martin OBE and drum and bass outfit London Elektricity with whom she headlined in 2016 at Finsbury Parks Hospital in the Park festival. She appeared with them again at Glastonbury Festival 2017. Equally at home in intimate jazz venues and vast performance spaces, in the summer of 2016 Liane took part in the BBC Late Night Proms performing at The Royal Albert Hall with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra Of Scotland. "She has the remarkable ability to sing every song totally from the heart as if she has just written it herself." Ralph Freeman Quartet featuring Rob Townsend

St Ives Jazz Club founder returns with some of his London buddies, to play a programme of their own distinctive take on some classic jazz material, along with new originals from Freeman himself. "Vibrant, energising music, with new compositions that span from bluesy to bossa-esque, all with be-boppy brio" Dan Matlin. Saxophonist Rob Townsend has spent much of the last five years touring with iconic prog-rock guitarist Steve Hackett. He also plays and records with acid-jazz hammond legend James Taylor. Over the years Rob has performed with many great names in British jazz such as Django Bates, Iain Ballamy, Mark Lockheart, Laurence Cottle, Tim Garland and Arnie Somogyi as well as with USA legends such as Sam Rivers and Eddie Henderson. Rob is an acclaimed jazz teacher, co-leading the excellent degree jazz programme at Middlesex University in London. Ralph Freeman, pianist, composer, artist. Founder of St Ives Jazz Club, which was awarded Jazz Venue Of The Year 2015 in the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Awards. As well as performing with his own ensembles and various original projects, he has worked with many of Britain's leading jazz musicians both at the Club and in London. Marcus Vergette, a bass player, composer and artist whose work includes jazz, classical, improv and pop. Present projects include London Sinfonietta, performances for the South Bank Centre and touring his Marsyas Suite. Andrea Trillo, a drummer, originally from Rome, who has performed with many British jazz icons including Don Weller, Jim Mullen, Tony Kofi and Julian Segal and has toured with the legendary Herbie Hancock.

Classic organ trio swing meets straight jazz with a twist of contemporary funk and groove. Hammond organ sounds with drums and guitar and featuring the wonderful talents of Sarah McDonagh on saxes and flute. This quartet play originals and material by the likes of Grant Green, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Smith et al.

The Jam Experiment

Jam Experiment are a 5-piece band that are based in London. They won the 2014 Jazz North Introduces Scheme, shortly after their debut gig supporting Liane Carroll. They have played at leading jazz festivals and venues across the UK, leaving audiences in awe. The lineup includes the winner of the inaugural BBC Young Musician Jazz Award, saxophonist Alexander Bone, trombonist Rory Ingham, Toby Comeau on piano/keyoboard, Joe Lee on bass, and Jonny Mansfield on drums. Alexander Bone and trombonist Rory Ingham were both voted as runners-up in the best instrumentalist (respectively) of the year in the British Jazz Awards 2016, and both were nominated for “Rising Star” in the 2016 British Jazz Awards, with Bone crowned Rising Star. The band are now based in London, studying at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall. Jam Experiment display a fresh, energetic and honest approach of original compositions and arrangements. All band members write music for the band and contribute musical ideas equally, creating a beautifully varied set of music, and a very individual, cool and funky sound. This gig will be part of their 35 date UK Debut Album Launch Tour!

Michelson Morley

With their debut release “Aether Drift”, Bristol-based Michelson Morley announced themselves as one of the most original and exciting UK jazz bands. The first album as writer and leader by Get The Blessing saxophonist Jake McMurchie exposed the talents of a brilliant and highly inventive new voice. Melodic, atmospheric, minimalist music featuring the best of Bristol’s jazz scene in the form of Will Harris on bass, Mark Whitlam on drums, with special guest Dan Messore on guitar. The band continued to expand their sonic range and emotional depth with their second release “Strange Courage” released on the iconic Babel Label.

His latest album ‘A Vigil For Justice. A Vigil For Peace.’ is for piano trio and features extensive original poetry inspired by the rapid political change in atmosphere in recent times, against the backdrop of so much unrealised human potential and vast inequalities. Epiphany 3 are touring in support of this new album. It features nine new pieces for piano trio and seven original poems . “A Vigil For Justice, A Vigil For Peace” is an album that deserves pride of place in any modern jazz enthusiasts collection

Dave’s sax sounds are highly personal and recognisable, with a clear sense of melodic development and adventure. A popular performer, with a wide palette from Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson to Stanley Turrentine and Michael Brecker. He relentlessly pursues artistic and sonic exploration, and the learning process. This band is unashamed to swing and draw on blues and functional harmonies and the great tome of jazz vocabulary.
